
Hall of Famer, Bears Icon Steve ‘Mongo’ McMichael Dies at Age 67
Steve “Mongo” McMichael, a beloved icon of both the NFL and professional wrestling, passed away on April 23, 2025, at the age of 67. He had been battling ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, since his diagnosis in 2021.
NFL Legacy
McMichael was a cornerstone of the Chicago Bears’ legendary defense in the 1980s. After joining the team in 1981, he played in a franchise-record 191 consecutive games and was a key member of the 1985 Super Bowl XX-winning squad. He earned two Pro Bowl appearances and finished his career with 92.5 sacks, the second-most in Bears history.
Career in Wrestling
Following his football career, McMichael found success in professional wrestling, joining WCW in 1995. He was a member of the famed “Four Horsemen” and won the WCW United States Heavyweight Championship in 1997.
Honors and Life
Steve McMichael was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2020 and the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2024. Born in Houston, Texas, on October 17, 1957, he played college football at the University of Texas. He is survived by his wife, Misty Davenport, and daughter, Macy.
Final Days
Despite being bedridden in his final months, McMichael remained a symbol of resilience and courage. He passed away peacefully in hospice care, surrounded by loved ones.
